DO YOU FEAR MATHS?

Strategies to overcome the fear of maths-

1] Find a mentor- The first and most important step to overcome the fear of maths is to find a mentor who has quality of high patience. He may not be very qualified but should be able to connect to the child easily. He should be able to teach from the basics. Teaching is easy but mentoring is a tough job. The mentor should be friendly but also be firm in extracting work from the child. He should be able to devise teaching techniques that may spark an interest in the child towards the subject. Patience, Not giving up on the child, Love for the student, Believing in the child and Constantly motivating the child to achieve the target are some of the traits of the mentor.

2] Active, Vigilant Parent- Like the mentor, the parent should also be actively participating, be conscious, and continuously be in coordination with the mentor to keep track on the progress of the child. Since the child spends most of the time at home, it becomes the duty of the parent to check whether the child is not distracted, he completes his assignments on time, and achieves his targets.

3] Get the concepts clear- The student’s duty is that he should be attentive and make sure that he understands the concepts thoroughly well. He should not be reluctant to ask the doubts repeatedly. This step is very important as otherwise the doubts will get piled up and the child will lose interest in the subject.

4] Practice hard- Most of the students become overconfident when they start understanding the concepts well. Hence, they leave the topic and move on to other issues. But this is a huge mistake! We tend to forget if we do not recall the information that we received. All the information that we receive is stored in the short-term memory of the mind, hence it gets erased if we do not transfer it to the long-term memory of the mind. For this, we need to rigorously practice hard till the concepts are on the tip of our tongues.

The Ebbinghaus forgetting curve is a graphical representation of the forgetting process. The curve demonstrates the declining rate at which information is lost if no particular effort is made to remember it

If the information is repeated too infrequently, retention and recall will fail. In this case, we will have to start the learning process all over again.

Hence practicing hard is the most important way to get mastery over maths in a short period of time.

5] Testing yourself- Once the practice part is thoroughly done, it gives you a little boost in your self-confidence. To test your knowledge and preparation levels, you need to give multiple tests and correction tests to ultimately achieve mastery over the topic.

This leaves you with a lot of confidence and your basics also get cleared, which helps ensure success in the rest of the topics.
