WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBSE, IGCSE, ICSE & IB boards?

CBSE is an abbreviation for Central Board of Secondary Education

SUITABILITY –

– For parents with transferable jobs

– For students who want to prepare for entrance exams like AIIPMT, JEE MAINS, NEET etc

AFFILIATION-

CBSE affiliates all Kendriya Vidyalayas, all Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, private schools, and most of the schools approved by the central government of India Examination Pattern: All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) for Class 10 and 12.

  • Areas of Operation: 25 Countries including India, Malaysia, Dubai, Georgia, Nigeria, etc
  • Major entrance exams syllabus based on CBSE viz. IIT, AIPMT, JEE, NATA etc

  • 1)-Continuous And Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), which is a new system of education implemented by CBSE for students of sixth to tenth grades, which has removed the marking system and introduced a grading system based on a series of curricular and extracurricular activities
  • 2)The curriculum focuses on Science and Mathematics as well as application-based subjects plus gives a lot of exposure to students for various competitive exams of all levels. For example-Olympiads etc
  • 3)CBSE is recognized by all colleges in India.

4) Numerous talent search examinations and scholarship exams such as SSTSE, NSEB, NSEC etc held at local and national level base their content on the CBSE syllabus. 5)Books and coaching are quite reasonably priced

CONS

1)Students from the CBSE board who wouldn’t crack entrance exams face problems in getting admission to state university colleges as they have a very less number of seats for the CBSE Board quota.

2)Fees can be on the high side for some schools.

3) There aren’t enough options to explore in the field of Arts and Literature

CISCE is an abbreviation for Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)

Examination Pattern: This body conducts three examinations-

• ICSE (Indian certificate secondary education) exam for class 10

• ISC (Indian school certificate) exam for class 12

• CVE (Certificate for vocational education) exam for class 12

Total Number of Schools Affiliated with CISCE: Approx. 1000

• Areas of Operation: India, UAE, Singapore, Indonesia

• Subjects Offered–Two are compulsory and there are 23 subjects to be chosen based on groups and 12 are foreign languages.

• Subjects offered in ISC(11th 12th)-A choice of 50 subjects with 23 Indian languages and 12 foreign languages. Hence the student can choose from a lot of subjects based on their interest.

Suitability-

This board is suitable for students who want to excel in the field of literature

Pros

1. Course curriculum is wide, covering a range of topics within a broad spectrum of subjects to ensure the overall growth of students based on their focus and career choice.

2. Focusses mainly on literature and languages

Cons

1. Syllabus is quite vast and cumbersome.

2. Students from the CISCE board who wouldn’t crack entrance exams face problems in getting admission to state university colleges as they have a very less number of seats for the CISCE Board.

3. Very high fees are charged by most the schools

IGCSE is an abbreviation for International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)

Suitability-

– It is suitable for students who are quite practical, smart, intelligent, sorted, and application-oriented and have to liberty to choose their own methodology to study. These students are more focused on the concept of learning

– It inculcates leadership skills in the child, discipline, and focuses on smart work rather than hard work

– Suitable across the globe and in demand internationally

Examination Pattern

• Primary level– For students of age 5 to 11 years

• Secondary 1 -For students of age 12 to 13 years

• Secondary 2 level is for students of age 14 to 16 years.

• Advanced level is for students aged 16 to 19 years who need an advanced curriculum to prepare for university and higher education. It offers two routes to the students: -Cambridge International AS and A Level, and Cambridge Pre-U.

Cambridge ‘A’ level is typically a two-year course and Cambridge ‘AS’ level is typically one year course. The students have the privilege to choose from a wide variety of 55 subjects on a group basis. The curricula of the ‘A’ and ‘AS’ level is quite flexible.

Pros

1. IGCSE is recognized by most Universities all over the world.

2. More advanced curriculum and variety of subjects to choose from.

5. Best option if parents are NRI, or are planning to move abroad.

6. Best suited for theoretical subjects, if the future orientation is law, psychology, sociology etc

7. Totally based on practical application methodology and preparing the students to face real situations in the world.

Cons

1. Generally very high fee is charged by elite schools

2. It is found only in metropolitan cities and Tier-1 cities in India

3. Difficult for students to shift boards if the need arises.

4. Tuition, Books not easily available.

IB is an abbreviation for International Baccalaureate (IB), formerly the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), is an international educational foundation whose headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland and founded in 1968.

Examination Pattern: It offers 3 educational programs, namely

• PYP or Primary year program for KG to Class-5

• MYP or Middle year program for Class-6 to Class-10

• DP or Diploma program for Class-11 and Class-12

• Number of Schools: Approx 3500 worldwide & 130 in India.

• Areas of Operations: 144 Countries including India, USA, UK, Australia etc

Subjects offered-

The compulsory subjects offered are Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and Creativity Action Service. The IGCSE has to choose from over 70 subjects based on groups

Pros

1. International Board recognized by most of the Universities of the world.

2. Students can apply to Foreign Universities wherein CBSE and ICSE board is not recognized.

3. Recognized by UNESCO, Council of Europe, Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF)

4. Curriculum based on application and experimentation.

5. Better Infrastructure of Schools.

6. Best option if parents are NRI, or are planning to move abroad.

7. IB helps in the development of language, logical reasoning, and analytical skills of the students giving them an edge in exams like SAT and GRE.

9. It helps the students build a profile.

10. A lot of emphasis is given to extra-curricular activities. 11. For global skill development and an innovative method of learning, this board can be followed.

Cons

1. Generally a very fee is charged by the IB schools.

2. IB schools are found only in metropolitan cities and Tier-1 cities in India

3. It becomes difficult for students to adapt and shift to other boards if the need arises, as the methodology is totally different

4. Tuition, Books not easily available.

5. Since its based on experimental methods, teachers need to be highly knowledgeable, experienced, and competitive

6. Kids may not be hard working as the use of a calculator, and technology is allowed
